FEAP 1f : develops learning experiences that require students to demonstrate a variety of applicable skills and competencies

This artifact is a lesson plan I designed for a unit about singing music from around the world. Thula Klizeo is a call and response song that comes from South Africa. The plan was developed as part of an assignment in MED542 (Teaching General Music) in the Fall of 2021.

This lesson acts as a great introduction to singing because the call and response form of Thula Klizeo is easy for children to understand and accomplish. This lesson also develops learning experiences that require students to demonstrate a variety of applicable skills and competencies. This lesson requires students to sing, move/dance, and connect to South African history/culture. For example, by the end of the lesson students will understand the effects the Apartheid had on music in South Africa and understand why it's important to celebrate and share this music today. One of the objectives is to pronounce "Thula Klizeo" and "Nalapa se Kaya" correctly in rhythm and recite the meaning of the two phrases. Students were led in a call and response of the text, then asked to add movements that associated with the meaning of the text (e.i. hands on heart for "Thula Klizeo" and hands palms-up gesturing outward for "Nalapa se Kaya"). In the lesson students will also be able to demonstrate swaying and cheat patting movements while singing the leader or echo part of Thula Klizeo. Demonstrating a rhythmic pattern while singing the correct pitches and rhythms of a melody might be challenging at first, but by the end of the lesson students will be pros!

This artifact is a lesson plan I designed for a unit about singing music from around the world. Viva La Musica is a round that comes from Italy. The plan was developed as part of an assignment in MED542 (Teaching General Music) in the Fall of 2021.

This lesson acts as a great introduction to melody and harmony because Viva La Musica is a song sung in a round. Rounds are perfect for young singers learning how to sing in harmony because they just have to sing the melody... at a different time! This lesson aligns instruction to standards at appropriate level because it directly applies to standard MU.4.S.3.1. : sing rounds, canons, and/or partner songs in an appropriate range, using proper vocal technique and maintaining pitch. By the end of the lesson students will be able to sing the melody for Viva La Musica, define a musical round, and sing Viva La Musica in a round (both part 1 and part 2). In this lesson plan it is ideal for there to be two teachers present to lead both parts, but it can be done with just one teacher as well. This lesson was designed for fourth grade and students should be able to learn the melody and sing it in a round in one class. However, if singing is new to most students, I recommend teaching the melody to the students a week before you introduce the round.
